Gather your supplies
• PVC pipe (5) 100mm x 1m lengths
• PVC push-on cap (5) 100mm
• Plants to suit (5) (we used acorus)
You’ll also need
Fine-grit sandpaper; impervious gloves; safety goggles; wide paintbrushes; dropsheet; Dulux Preplock Water Based Stain Blocker (tinted Grey, optional); Dulux Design Rust Base Paint; Dulux Design Rust Solution; disposable bowl; exteriorgrade clear varnish; spray bottle; small pebbles; potting mix
1. You will need a separate brush for rust solution.
2. Secure planters to wall to prevent tilting
Step 1 Lightly sand outside of PVC pipes with sandpaper. Drill 5 holes in each push-on cap.
Step 2 Over dropsheet, use wide paintbrush to paint pipes and push on caps in Preplock. Stand to dry.
Step 3 Wearing gloves and goggles, use random brush strokes step1 step 2 step 4 step 6 step 7 It’s a cover up! 6. Clip together pavers like these. Step 4 Wearing gloves and goggles, place push-on caps on 1 end of each PVC pipe. Pour a small amount of Rust Solution in disposable bowl and, again using random brush strokes, paint pipe assemblies in 2 coats of Rust Solution. Be generous with your applications, taking care not to overspread the solution. Stand to dry for 8 hours after each coat.
Step 5 The rust effect will develop over 12 hours. To accelerate rusting, lightly mist pipes with water using spray bottle during this period.
Step 6 Coat pipes in exterior-grade clear varnish. Stand to dry.
Step 7 Fill bottom third of pipes with small pebbles, then add potting mix and plant up, 1-2cm shy of top.
