How to create swirl art
First apply your edge colour with a squeegee, roller or brush, then squirt multiple colours of paint directly onto the canvas. Use a squeegee to form the paint swirls and you are done! If you need to fill an even bigger space, create a gallery wall of canvases, varying the placement and colours of the circles.
Gather your supplies
• Stretched canvas
• Jo Sonja’s Artists’ Acrylic Colours in Aqua, Titanium White, Jade, Skin Tone Base, Green Oxide, Jaune Brilliant
• Jo Sonja’s Matte Varnish
You’ll also need
Drop sheet; plastic lid to use
as a palette; plastic squeegee;
flat paintbrush; wide soft brush
Here’s how
Step 1 Working on a flat surface covered with drop sheet, mix Aqua and Titanium White on plastic lid to make light aqua. Apply paint to 1 side of squeegee with flat paintbrush. Using 2 hands, drag squeegee across canvas surface until fully covered. Leave to dry.
Step 2 Drizzle all paints directly to canvas to make a large circle. Use Titanium White at centre.
Step 3 With squeegee edge at circle centre, drag squeegee around circle.
Step 4 Continue dragging squeegee, repositioning hands as needed for full rotation. Wipe clean and reposition further from centre to spread paint at edges of circle. Repeat process to create another arc in corner of canvas. Leave to dry. Use wide soft brush to paint artwork with 2 coats of matte varnish, leaving to dry between coats.
