3 ways to chill a bottle of wine fast

3 ways to chill a bottle of wine fast

While a good bottle of wine is the perfect accompaniment for a lazy summer afternoon, celebration, girls weekend, romantic dinner and everything in-between, there’s nothing worse than going to crack a sweet rose, only to find it lukewarm and underwhelming.

Never fear, because there’s a hack for that, and all you need is what’s already in your kitchen: water, salt and ice.

Create an ice bath in a bucket big enough to completely submerge your bottle of wine, and sprinkle it with a very generous amount of salt.

Once the bottle is completely submerged, the bottle will be encased with ice and therefore reduce the internal temperature of your treasured wine quickly. The salt will reduce the freezing point of the water, making the water ice cold without it solidifying.

So, why is this more effective than stuffing your bottle of liquid gold into the freezer for fifteen minutes? Because liquids are better at transferring heat than gases, and in order to chill the vino the heat from the bottle needs to be transferred to its environment. An ice bath ensures every inch of the bottle is in contact with a liquid that is ice-cold, and can instantly absorb heat.

Need to chill a single glass of wine? Then have some frozen grapes at the ready, and pop 2-3 in each glass that requires cooling. It’ll reduce the temperature of the wine without diluting the wine or changing it’s flavor.

Just can’t be bothered with the whole ice-bath thing? Try wrapping a damp paper towel around the entire bottle and pop it into the freezer for 15-20 minutes. However, don’t forget you’ve put your bottle of wine in the freezer, because wine can and will freeze if the temperature is low enough and the expansion can put too much pressure on the cork and glass, resulting in an in-freezer explosion.
