This is exactly how much cash you should fork out for a wedding gift

It’s not that we have anything against champagne glasses and monogrammed towels. It’s that your just-married pals deserve more than a gift that’s destined to gather dust at the back of their linen cupboard. Which brings us to cash…

Although there are no hard and fast rules around what the appropriate amount to slip into a wedding card or wishing well actually is, here’s an equation that might help take out the guesswork:

Speaking to Bustle, wedding planner Trish Simitakos suggested that 10 per cent of your pre-tax weekly salary should suffice. (So, if your weekly salary before tax is $2200, budget to shell out $220.)

So far, so straightforward. But there are a few things to keep in mind. E.g. Simitakos doesn’t specify whether this covers a couple or just one person. Also, those who have a lot of financial obligations (or don’t make a lot of money) shouldn’t feel obligated to drop this much coin on one day. After all, the price of attending a wedding - without even factoring in the gift - can be steep… Real steep.

“This is a wedding, not a fundraiser, and ultimately you 'should' be invited because the couple wants to share their celebration with you," Simitakos added. "The key is to make a budget for yourself and stick to it. There are many creative ways to participate, without going broke."

Something to think about next time an invite turns up in the mail.
