Gather your supplies
Transfer paper; 30cm square of red felt; embroidery hoop and needle; stranded embroidery cotton: white, yellow, blue and red; polyester fibrefill; 30cm natural twine.
Step 1 Enlarge and trace pattern onto white paper. Using transfer paper, transfer pattern outline and all the dark design lines onto red felt for the ornament front.
Step 2 (Use 3 strands of cotton for all embroidery.) With white thread, work backstitch for saddle and mane outlines, split-stitch for the bridle and French knots at dots on mane.
Step 3 Referring to the lightweight lines on pattern and using blue thread, work lazy daisy stitches on saddle, backstitch on mane, and threaded running stitch for belly and chest straps.
Step 4 With yellow cotton, work lazy daisy stitches on mane, running stitch between white saddle outlines and straight stitches in a V-shape at top of each lazy daisy stitch on saddle.
Step 5 Cut out the embroidered front. Use pattern to cut a matching back from felt. With wrong sides together and using running stitch and red cotton, sew front and back together, working close to the edges. As you stitch, stuff the shape with polyester fibrefill and catch the ends of a twine hanging loop between felt pieces at base of mane.
