Shelving doesn’t have to be just a place to store stuff, you can use it to complement your home’s décor or as a bold contrast that really stands out.
Custom creations
Make the most of your walls with shelving purpose built to fit the space. It also helps to make a dramatic feature of the window it surrounds. Incorporating a small window seat into your design makes it the perfect place to curl up with a book or to read the kids a story. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune either. Wide timber panels are available from hardware stores and timber suppliers. All you have to do is cut them to fit your space then paint.
Instant style
Even the standard track shelving you can pick up from your local hardware store can add to the style of your home. Start by spray painting the tracks and shelf brackets with metallic spray paint before mounting them to the wall. Using timber shelving also adds a sophisticated touch to your display.
Painted fun
Add a cheery touch to your shelving project with paint. Deep green contrasts wonderfully with the objects sitting on them, so they really stand out. Add a bit of glam with gold leaf glued around the edges of the shelves.
Shelf of art
For a different take on an artistic display, why not arrange your favourite artworks on a shelf instead of hanging them on the wall? The shelf itself isn’t that complicated and won’t cost you big bucks. Take a few pieces of inexpensive pine and stain them to give the illusion of more expensive timber. Screw two lengths together in an L shape and nail a smaller piece to the front to rest your artworks against. Then just screw through the back of the shelf and into the wall. Too easy!
In the frame
Add inexpensive shelving to your shed or studio by using the walls frames to support the shelves. Simply nail short battens up the sides of the wall studs, making sure the corresponding pair on each side is level. Use a shelf as a spacing block as you work your way up the wall. Then just slot your shelves between the battens at a height that suits what you want to store.
