Don’t just give chocolates in a box; make the packaging part of the gift! Metallic spray paint adds glam to a plain old jar and kitchen cabinet knob. Drill a hole through the centre of the lid and screw the knob to the top. Take them outside to spray and leave them for a few hours to dry. Fill the jar with her favourite treats and you’re done. Once they’ve been devoured, she can use her classy canisters for storing just about anything.

A glass vase can come alive with a spotty makeover. An easily accessible tool to apply the paint is the eraser on the bottom of a pencil. Use her favourite colour to make it even more personal or mix and match a whole range of colours for a gift that’ll really brighten her day.

Another great use for old jars is to turn them into decorative memory capsules. Choose a recent happy time that you’ve all spent together and use materials from the time to recreate the feeling. Sand and shells for a beach holiday and pebbles, soil and small succulents to remind her of your recent trip to the bush.

Add a soft glow to Mum’s dinner parties with golden candle holders. Take a couple of small cups and spray the inside with a fine mist of water. Spray over the beads with metallic gold spray paint, which will leave the glass slightly translucent, then leave it to dry.
