One savvy member of the Facebook group Mum’s Who Clean shared a simple yet ingenious solution: she extended her countertop by using the LÄMPLIG chopping board from IKEA, which costs a mere $12.

In her post, she showcased the chopping board resting on top of her stove, illustrating its seamless integration into her kitchen layout. 

“Yes, my stove is dirty and will be cleaned, but I wanted to try the $12 IKEA chopping board first. I bought two, thinking I would need both, but I only required one. It’s perfect for extra space,” she explained to the group.

Members of the group swiftly chimed in, praising her brilliant idea. One person thanked her for the suggestion, saying it would suit their small kitchen.

Others shared their own experiences, agreeing with the hack’s practicality. “I do this with two of them,” said a member with a wider gas stove. Adding, “I don’t keep them there all the time, but boy, when you are entertaining (and not using the stovetop), they come in handy for that added bit of bench space.” 

Meanwhile, another revealed, “I used one over my gas stove top to add bench space in my tiny kitchen and another over my unused laundry tub to create a bench in there, too.” 

Over at the IKEA website, the LÄMPLIG chopping board has an impressive five stars, and many reviewers say they also use it to create extra storage space on their kitchen bench.

“This is the second one of these boards I have bought. I have used them to create a temporary bench in my makeshift kitchenette, and they have done the job perfectly!” said one reviewer.

Another said, “Great, and it fits the sink well. I recommend following the directions and oiling it for best results!”

Care Instructions for a bamboo chopping board

  1. Regular cleaning: After each use, clean the bamboo chopping board with a mild, soapy solution and warm water. 
  2. Drying: Once cleaned, ensure the chopping board is thoroughly dried with a clean, dry cloth. 
  3. Oil treatment: To maintain the integrity and longevity of the bamboo chopping board, it should be treated with a food-approved oil regularly. Using a clean cloth or paper towel, apply a thin layer of mineral oil, coconut oil, or beeswax to the surface of the board. Allow the oil to penetrate the bamboo for a few hours or overnight before wiping any excess.
