Just about anything you need to store ends up in the garage. Apart from the tools, garden equipment and camping gear, everything else from sporting gear to old clothes generally gets thrown in as well. It’s no wonder it ends up in a mess! Here are a few ideas to tidy up your garage and keep everything in its place.
Shelve it
Steel shelving racks are an instant way to organise your garage. They assemble in minutes and are modular so you can add onto them as your storage needs increase – and you know they will! Plastic storage crates keep everything together and the lid means their contents stay dust free. Store heavy items down low to reduce heavy lifting.
On the walls
You can use the walls of your garage to store a whole range of things. Racks with hooks are very versatile and a good solution for garden tools, while individual hooks can go just about anywhere. Get bikes off the ground using hooks that are specially designed for them. If floor space is limited, install a set of shelves high up on the wall and store items that are rarely used up there.
Get to work
Every garage needs a workbench! A freestanding unit comes with a metal pegboard so you can keep all your tools organised. Matching tool trolleys and cabinets fit perfectly under the bench and give you lockable storage for valuable tools, chemicals and anything sharp you don’t want the kids to get into. Finish it off with a metal cabinet to keep all your nails, screws and other hardware items hidden away behind closed doors
Look up!
Hanging items from the ceiling adds a whole new dimension to garage storage. You can hang bulky yet lightweight items like a kayak on a set of pulleys so raising and lowering it is easy. Lengths of timber can be kept stored together in a length of PVC pipe attached to the ceiling with metal strapping. Make sure you screw into the structural timbers of the ceiling so whatever you are storing stays up there.
Build your own!
If you have an area that an odd shape or hard to put bought shelves into, then make your own. Pine framing timber is used for the structure and plywood sheets for the shelves and workbench. Add a sheet of masonite pegboard to the wall behind the workbench to store your tools.
