Let there be light

Usually, the forgotten room when it comes to lighting, the bathroom is now one of the most thought out. The newest addition is the pendant light near the vanity. Popular choices are the single pendant with a designer shade that picks up on another bathroom feature and a cluster of fittings with bare Edison bulbs set at different heights. For task lighting, LED strips under the mirror cabinet or around a mirror on its own are in.

Magnificent metals

When it comes to tapware and accessories, the choices were between chrome in a polished or brushed finish. An explosion of colour and texture has entered this area with fittings now coming in a range of metallic options. Rose gold, matt black, antiqued and burnished brass have also hit the scene. Selecting other elements in the bathroom, like the lighting, in the same material helps unify the scheme.

Colour and shape

While predominantly white and neutral bathrooms will never go out of fashion, the on-trend way to inject interest is using tiles with intricate patterns and shapes. Hexagonal mosaic tiles on a feature wall or on the floor are very popular while others are square but use colourful geometric patterns as the feature. Another new development is the 3D tile. The patterns on the tile are set at different heights adding a new dimension to the wall.

Vanity matters

Far from just being the place where you wash your hands and store your stuff, the vanity is the design piece of the bathroom. A bright gloss finish is a way to inject colour into the room, while timber adds warmth and character. Light-coloured timber suits a light and airy scheme like Scandi, while a darker timber is perfect for a bathroom with more mood. The feature bowl on the vanity top introduces another shape into the mix.
