Ice buckets or esky The esky is an Aussie icon and an essential element to a successful Australia Day party in order to keep your beverages cool. There’s no shortage of choice when it comes to size and construction. An esky with wheels is very convenient when moving it around, especially with the larger coolers. Alternatively, grab an ice bucket (which can come in plastic or galvanised metal) and fill it with ice.

Barbecue fuel You don’t want to get to Australia Day and realise that you’ve run out of gas, briquettes or charcoal. Check your barbecue fuel supply to make sure you have enough before the Australia Day celebrations. There’s nothing worse than running out of fuel right in the middle of cooking your snags, along with a backyard full of hungry guests.

Insect repellent Keep those pesky insects such as mosquitos at bay with mosquito coils, citronella oil torches, or if you prefer something less smoky, try citronella candles. Citronella is a naturally occurring insect repellent that works by masking scents that are attractive to insects. Sandalwood sticks are also a great, natural, chemical free way of repelling insects.

Sun protection Don’t run the risk of sunburn or sunstroke on Australia Day – make sure you provide your guests relief from the sun. Erect some kind of shading, such as umbrellas or a shade sail. A portable gazebo is also the perfect shelter alternative to installing other heavy, permanent sheltering solutions.

Don’t have a pool? No worries, you can still have fun in the sun with an inflatable pool that can be set up in a matter of minutes (excluding the time it takes to fill up with water). Once you have finished having fun in the pool, you can attach a valve to a garden hose and recycle the water to give the garden a soak.
