Once a functional space to shower and go about one’s private business, the bathroom is now the new living room.
That’s right; people are transforming their bathrooms into living-room-style spaces, offering more luxury.
Why the bathroom is the new living room
Daniela Santilli, Bathrooms & Kitchens Merchandising Leader at Reece Bathrooms, says, “The bathroom has always served as a place to escape to, a space for relaxation and rejuvenation, but the importance of its role as a sanctuary increased during the pandemic.”
As a result, we’re seeing people designing bathrooms with living room vibes.
“And why shouldn’t your bathroom be as beautiful as your bedroom or living room?” says Daniela. “Creating a more luxurious and personalised bathroom promotes comfort and relaxation.
“Achieving this makes it easier for you to follow your daily rituals, from getting ready for the day or winding down at the end of it.”
How to make a bathroom look luxurious
House of Rohl’s Stylist Fiona Gould says people are putting much more thought into decorating their bathrooms.
“The appeal is to make your bathroom feel welcoming, stylish and an extension of the rest of our home. For example, a long soak in your bath should feel like a luxurious experience, and being surrounded with some decorative pieces that bring you joy is key,” she says.
So how do you add luxury to a bathroom? The easiest place to start is with your walls.
“Start with the walls, an artwork, wall mirror or splash of paint colour,” says Fiona. “If you have the space, create a sitting zone with an armchair, stool and lighting near your bath for the ultimate indulgent nook.”
Fiona also recommends adding a potted plant to add some life to your bathroom, but that’s not all.
In addition, she says, “You can add decorative accessories like vases, bowls and storage boxes/baskets to tie in with the rest of your home’s decor so that this space does reflect your style and becomes an extension of the rest of your home.”
“A statement colour bath which ties in with the rest of your home’s colour palette like the Vetralla or Toulouse bath from Victoria & Albert is a perfect way to bring your living room style straight into the bathroom.”
How to make a small bathroom look elegant
While not all bathrooms have the space to add somewhere comfy to sit and relax, Fiona says, “there’s plenty of small ways to inject a bit more life through just a beautiful non-traditional bath mat or a pop of greenery in a pot.”
