How to clean vertical blinds

How to clean fabric blinds
Fabric blinds might be a little trickier to clean than vinyl and wooden ones. But it’s not impossible.
To remove stains from fabric blinds, it’s essential to check the care instructions and choose a stain remover that won’t damage the type of fabric. You can use a soft toothbrush to scrub the spot to help lift the stain gently.
Always read the labels of the cleaning products you are using. And if in doubt, ask your manufacturer how they recommend cleaning fabric roller blinds.
How to clean Roman blinds
Cleaning Roman blinds is very similar to cleaning fabric blinds. Before cleaning your Roman blinds, check the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning.
If your Roman blinds need more than a spot clean and they can’t be put in the washing machine, handwashing might be an option for you. Here’s how to handwash Roman blinds.
- Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and a mild detergent.
- Submerge the blinds in the soapy water and gently agitate them.
- Allow the blinds to soak for a few minutes to loosen dirt and stains.
- Gently scrub the blinds with a soft brush or sponge, focusing on any particularly dirty or stained areas.
- Rinse the blinds thoroughly with clean water to remove all the soap.
- Carefully squeeze out excess water from the blinds without wringing or twisting them.
- Hang the blinds outside or in a well-ventilated area to air dry.
- Ensure they are fully dry before rehanging them to prevent mould growth.
How to clean mould from blinds
If you’ve noticed mould growing on your blinds, the outbreak’s severity will determine if you can remove it yourself.
If the mould growth is small and made from a hard non-porous surface, you can try to kill and remove the mould yourself.
Lucinda Curran is an Indoor Environmental Health Consultant. She previously told BHG killing mould is not enough.
“The presence of mould, dead or alive, can be problematic for someone sensitive to it,” says Lucinda. “Like hay fever, the presence of the pollen triggers a response; it doesn’t matter whether or not the flowers are in a vase or growing.”
“This is why removing mould is essential.”
She says using a microfibre cloth is the key to properly removing mould from hard surfaces.
As for killing mould, Lucinda recommends using dishwashing detergent mixed with warm water. You can add essential oils, like oregano and thyme, to the soapy water mix to “supercharge the effect”. Find her instructions for removing mould here.
For fabric blinds, your best bet at killing and removing mould is to wash it on a hot cycle in the washing machine. If that doesn’t work, consider replacing your blinds.
