Redecorating your home, or planning the style of a new home, is a big job. You have to choose and plan a colour palette, pick fabrics for your furniture, accent colours for your soft furnishings and ensure that your furniture and colour palette fit into the ‘style’ of interior you are trying to achieve.
Being that it is such a big job, many people choose to hire a stylist or interior designer to keep the process running smoothly. With that in mind, we asked two stylists to tell us what the two most common decorating problems are, and how to solve them.
1. You become overwhelmed by decorating decisions
Emma Blomfield, Interior Stylist & Author
“The most common issue I find my clients struggled with is being overwhelmed,” says Emma. “They start the process of redecorating or renovating and get completely overwhelmed with all of the decisions they need to make in order to get the project off the ground. When working with builders or contractors there are time pressures to make decisions, which means my clients often make mistakes with their choices because they haven’t had adequate time to research and decide properly.”
“My advice is to sit down and create a plan for the decorating or renovating project. This document should detail all visual elements (such as furniture items, kitchen bench top images, sinks, rugs, etc) and include a list of the product information such as product codes, dimensions, supplier details and pricing,” says Emma.
“This document should then be shared with all contractors, therefore minimising the amount of questions each contractor will ask questions. It’s almost like the decorating bible for the project and allows all key people to be across all of the finer details. I find planning ahead like this allows my clients to relax and also feel more in control of the project as a whole.”
2. You don’t let the home influence your style
Heidi Albertiri, Stylist & Founder of The Life Style Edit
“I think people forget to style the space with what the space needs,” says Heidi. “If you stick to your own style but it doesn’t match the actual design and interior of the home it tends to look disjointed. Take the time to live in your space to see what it needs from a practical and interior design perspective. This way you will develop a beautiful continuity between your style and the architectural features of your home.”
“There’s nothing worse than walking into a house that feels disconnected and doesn’t work with its surroundings, so taking the time to build on your interior pieces will pay off in the long run. Don’t feel like you have to fill the entire space in one go. Buy one beautiful piece and add to the story over time.”
