You may have never set foot in Stockholm but chances are you’ve had at least one Billy bookcase, a Malm bed and a Lack bedside table.
And that’s OK. But there comes a time when you want to shed the uni vibe and embrace adulthood which means it’s time to update your furniture.
The good news is, you can reinvent your Ikea bedroom (and lounge) simply by moving it around and adding a few new accents.
Here’s how…
The table
The Lack table has been in the Ikea range since 1979.
The easy way to jazz it up is with a set of three cylinder vases filled with a bunch of artificial lilies from the Ikea market. Pop a Friskhet scented candle on there and let the fragrance indulge your senses.
Alternatively, extend the surface space and give it a fresh new look by overlapping it with a Stockholm side table. The two different heights will add interest as well as give your room textural definition.
The chair
Ah, the Pöang chair. Look familiar? That’s because it’s the number one bestselling lounge room item at Ikea and you probably have (or once had) one.
Updating any Ikea chair and giving it a fresh look is another easy fix.
Simply add two metres of print fabric and throw it over the back of the chair for a new pop of colour, which will bring even the oldest Ikea chair to life.
Or, move it to the baby’s room and use it as a nursing chair. Soften the look (and make it extra comfortable) by draping the Ludde sheepskin rug over the back.
The shelves
You’ve put in all that effort to put them together yourself so before you think about updating your Ikea shelves (Vittsjo by any chance?) give them a designer twist by moving them out of the lounge room and into the bathroom.
Roll up your towels and add a couple of white baskets (such as Brankis from you know where). In seconds you’ll transform those old Ikea shelves into a bathroom standout that would look at home in a New York loft apartment.
The bench
If you’ve got an Ikea bench there are so many ways you can give it a new twist.
First off, use it as a shoe rack. Pop a Fejka artificial pot plant in a Socker stainless steel pot and see how it gives your home a tropical beach house vibe. Perfect for holiday homes!
Alternatively, place it in the bathroom with a Fejka artificial orchid and a stack of folded hand towels, instantly creating a day spa ambience.
You’ll be so enthralled by your new five star feel.
The drawers
Two ways you can improve a set of Ikea drawers is by inserting Skubb compartment boxes.
The joy of having all your underwear neatly folded will get you so excited you’ll look beyond the drawers and be searching for the next Marie Kondo series on Netflix.
Another option is to replace the drawer handles. It’s a small and inexpensive modification that will immediately update your chest of drawers and make them feel new again.
Your old Ikea furniture never looked so good!
