5 holiday traditions worth starting this Christmas

‘Tis the season - by Laura Barry
  • 22 Nov 2018

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year that’s all about celebrating and being thankful for your friends and family. It’s a time when everyone can come together, reminisce on the year that was and take a break to recharge.

5 holiday traditions worth starting this Christmas

One of the best ways to get into the Christmas spirit and celebrate with loved ones is by engaging in a Christmas tradition. A fun activity that can be handed down through generations, and bring a little extra magic to the festive season.

Here are four new traditions worth starting this Christmas.

1. The Christmas lock-in day

The Christmas lock-in day is an opportunity to gather your nearest and dearest and lock everyone down to watch a Christmas movie together at home, eat festive foods and generally spend the day relaxing and enjoying one another’s company. This day is great opportunity for everyone to have a fun, quiet and chilled-out day at home before the chaos of Christmas takes over. Best of all, It’s pretty much free!

2. Make your own Christmas ornaments

DIY-ing a few Christmas ornaments isn’t just an activity for children, it can be a fun, therapeutic and low-key way to take some time for yourself this Christmas, and channel a little bit of the creativity that you might have felt ebbing away towards the end of the year. Get the family involved and have everyone make one ornament every Christmas, and watch as your tree grows with memories each year.

3. Volunteer

While Christmas is a time to be with friends and family, it’s also a time that hits those of us who are doing it tough the hardest. This Christmas, why not start the tradition of volunteering or giving to a charity? It could be something as simple as donating to St Vinnies’ or the Salvos Christmas appeals, or volunteering in local shelters.

4. Curate a holiday playlist

Even if you aren’t a huge fan of carols, there must be a few festively-theme songs that get you into the Christmas spirit? Every year when you put up the Christmas tree, spend some time curating a playlist of yuletide tunes for this Christmas. Change it up every year, and update it with new celebrity Christmas albums, and play it all December.

5. Christmas baking

Baking is an activity the entire family can get involved in, and the best things about cookies and slices is that the recipes are generally pretty easy to follow. This year, get the family involved in making a ginger bread house or baking cookies cut out into Christmas-themed shapes. Let the kids decorate them with icing and edible treats. Better yet, this is a great opportunity to make edible gifts for those hard-to-buy-for folk in your life.
