Keep Dad’s hands in tip-top condition with a new set of gardening gloves. For heavy-duty tasks, such as tree lopping, choose a long-lasting leather pair. For regular use, such as trimming and light garden work, choose a lighter-weight pair, perhaps with breathable panels and a little more flexibility to allow ease of hand movement.
- Leaf blower
If Dad is in charge of the garden tidy up, he’ll love having more time up his sleeve thanks to a handy leaf blower. The job will be done in a jiffy! When looking at the available options, the two main considerations are the weight of the blower and the fuel type (petrol, electric or battery-powered). Also look at vacuum models that not only offer the blow feature, they also allow for leaf matter to be collected into a vac bag.
- Snip, snip!
Whether Dad’s outdoor area consists of potted shrubs on a balcony or a much larger green space, he’ll need a pair of trimmers to keep the plants looking schmick. For small tasks, a good-quality pair of secateurs are a must-have. Lighter-weight garden scissors or snips are also terrific to have on hand (no more pinching the kitchen scissors!). A pair of branch loppers are handy for tree maintenance, whereas brand new hedge shears will ensure Dad’s hedge is in shipshape order at all times.
- Vegie garden kit
You can’t beat growing your own! If Dad loves the idea of having his own vegie patch in the backyard, consider buying him a raised vegie garden kit. The two most popular types are timber and metal. Just have an idea of what size you’re after, then head to Bunnings to check out the range. Want to supersize the gift? Add bags of potting mix, a selection of seedlings, fertiliser and mulch to the trolley, too!
- Tree in a pot
For a gift that keeps on giving in the garden, consider buying Dad a fruit tree. Look for gorgeous citrus trees, apples, stone fruit or an olive tree. Just buy a pot to suit and gift to Dad with love!
