After a boom in the 1970’s, we saw native Australian plants fall out of favour. But like most things, it was only a matter of time before garden style became popular again.

Native Australian plants are going through a revival at present and it’s been worth the wait.

“There seems to be a bit of a shift in the next generation looking to find that sense of place in where they live,” landscape designer Sam Cox told Domain. “A lot of people now hike or ride bikes through the country and are looking for that relaxed nature that our natural environment can create for us.”

How to grow Grevillea

A popular plant grown all over Australia, grevilleas are fuss-free, native shrubs that flower, flower and flower – they really don’t know when to stop!

Grevilleas need full sun and well-drained soils. Consider building raised garden beds or, in large gardens, form beds as elevated mounds with free-draining soil.

A few weeks prior to planting, dig into the soil a combination of well-aged cow manure and blood and bone. Avoid using fresh manures, as these can burn the plant roots. If growing in pots, use a potting mix formulated for natives, such as Debco Native Mix Superior or Osmocote Professional Native.
