To get you started, here are three things to keep in mind when planting your garden.

KNOW YOUR RAINFALL

How much annual rain do you get and when? Is it mostly in winter (southern Australia), in summer (tropics and subtropics) or evenly spread (Melbourne and Sydney)? For success with minimum care, choose plants from places with similar rainfall.

USE YOUR CLIPPINGS

Spread fine prunings on the garden instead of tossing in the green bin, and weeds without seeds or bulbs. Make compost from lawn clippings, leaves and vegie waste. Spread when broken down.

TIME YOUR PLANTINGS

Establish new plants during mild weather at the start of your rainiest period. Don’t plant when weather is hot and dry, or cold and dry. Water in and once or twice more if the rain stays away.
