Sculpt a circular lawn

Think around a square problem
Better Homes and Gardens

If you have only a small square space available for a lawn, think around the problem! A circular-shaped lawn introduces interesting geometry to the area.

Gather your supplies:

• Garden soil mix

• Selection of shrubs and feature trees

• Turf underlay soil

• ‘Sir Walter’ buffalo turf

You’ll also need:

Hammer; stake; string; spray marker paint; garden fork; shovel; rake; sharp knife

Here’s how…

Step 1

To mark out perimeter of circular lawn, hammer stake into centre point and secure a length of string equal to half the diameter of desired circle. Tie other end around paint can and keep string taut as you spray the circle.

Step 2

Using garden fork and shovel, cultivate soil in garden bed area, surrounding marked circle. Spread a generous layer of garden soil mix over top and lightly fork in. Plant out area with shrubs and place Tristaniopsis ‘Luscious’ or other feature trees in each corner.

Step 3

Fork over soil inside marked circle, then spread 2–3cm of turf underlay soil over top. Rake to level.

Step 4

Unroll turf across soil bed, using sharp knife to trim around edges of circle. Fill joins between rolls with underlay soil, then walk over lawn to press turf down. Water in well.

Tip: After a day or two, top up adjoining garden beds with extra soil if needed due to settling.
