The cheapest way to raise vegies is to grow them from seed, and you’ll also find a much wider range of varieties this way.

But transplanting seedlings into the garden can be tricky, so grow vegies the easy way in Jiffy Pots. You’ll find them at nurseries and garden centres.

Buy them as a kit which contains the pots of compressed, dried peat, a tray and a clear cover.

STEP 2

Pour warm water over the pots in the tray. In a few minutes they expand into little cylinders.

Place one seed in the hollow in the top of each cylinder and press into the moist soil.

Drain any excess water, then put the clear plastic cover over the tray to make a mini greenhouse. Put in a warm spot out of full sun.

When seedlings emerge, remove the cover and place the tray in sun. Keep moist. When seedlings are about 8cm tall, simply plant out, peat pot and all.
