Just when you think you’ve seen everything, along comes the chicken swing.
Designed to reduce boredom, the chicken swing keeps chooks active and healthy.
According to Kassandra Smith of Backyard Chicken Coops, a chicken swing is best positioned in a sheltered area of the chicken coop or yard.
You can acquaint your chickens with the swing by setting the swing “about 10cm off the ground”.
“Let your chickens peck and investigate the swing to familiarise themselves with their new plaything for at least 24 hours. After a few days, raise the chicken swing about 45cm above the ground,” she said.
It may take a few incentives to encourage your chickens to use the swing.
“If you have a chook that will eat mealworm treats from your hand they are the prime candidate,” advises Smith.
“Work for a few minutes every day getting your trusting chook to interact with you and the swing for treats and attention. The flock will catch on.”
If the swing isn’t popular with your flock, it pays to persevere.
“Chickens are curious, smart and cautious – so don’t be discouraged if they seem to avoid the swing at first,” said Smith.
Once a chicken has worked up the courage to try the swing, you shouldn’t add movement too quickly “as this can startle them and undo all your hard work. Take your time and use your treats!”
“Every chook is different and takes to different things at different rates,” Smith said.
