Lilies
With their flamboyant trumpet-shaped blooms, lilies are standouts in the summer garden. They come in a vast colour range – almost every shade but blue – and many of them are fragrant too, so they’re great for cutting and displaying indoors.
Hippeastrums
Like lilies, hippeastrums bear trumpet-shaped blooms, but on shorter, more sturdy stems – you won’t need to stake them! The colours are mostly strong shades of red, yellow and salmon orange, but it comes in pure white too.
Japanese Irises
With magnificent open flowers in shades of mauve, purple and white, and attractive sword shaped leaves, Japanese irises make elegant garden plants. They’ll grow happily in climates from cool through to sub-tropical and put on their early-summer display, year after year.
Daylilies
Producing large clumps of strappy foliage, daylilies are wonderfully tough garden plants. The lily-like summer flowers come in a vast range of colours and, while each individual bloom lasts only a single day, they appear in such profusion the overall display is stunning.
Gladioli
Their long, graceful spires of flowers give ‘gladdies’ a height advantage in the garden – you can’t miss them. It also makes them easy to mix in with existing perennials and shrubs, as they don’t take up a lot of space.
