Four ways to disguise split ends

Tricks and tips for hiding damaged hair. - by Laura Barry

Four ways to disguise split ends

Unfortunately, hair is one of those things that really does show exactly how much time, effort and care you’ve invested into it (or lack thereof!). As a result, many of us battle the flyaway and frizzy situation of split ends each morning as we try to tame a mane of hair into a socially acceptable shape.

However, for those of you who really can’t get into a hairdresser for a trim, there’s a few ways you can tame those angry split ends.

1. Use a split-end sealer

There’s no way to reverse split ends aside from having your hair cut. However, you can certainly hide them and prevent further splitting. Pick up a split-end sealer or mender from your local hairdresser, hair care store or cosmetic retailer. These products can seal the split end and stop them from getting worse, while also taming down the frizz and fly-aways.

2. Use a hair mask

Most haircare professionals recommend using a moisturising and repairing hair mask once a week on hair that is regularly colour treated or heat-styled. This mask can temporarily rehydrate hair and give a little more weight and softness to your bedraggled strands.

3. Don’t tie up wet hair

When hair is wet it becomes more vulnerable to breakage as it’s 50 per cent weaker when wet than it is dry. Try to avoid brushing wet hair too much or pulling it up into a ponytail or bun. Give your hair a quick blast with the blow-dryer on cool to speed up the drying process. In fact, the Chief Technology Officer at GHD recommends blow drying your hair all the time to reduce damage.

4. Use products that will protect your hair

Prevention is always better than cure, so if you consistently find yourself struggling with split ends it’s time you invested in some protective leave-in products. Products such as leave-in conditioners and thermal sprays that protect your hair from heat-styling are an absolute must. In fact, Renya Xydis, celebrity hairstylist and owner of Valonz, says her top tip for promoting healthier hair is to always apply a heat protectant before using hot styling tools.
