Tried and tested: Pickle and peanut butter sanga

A sandwich expert weighs in.

Forget peanut butter and jelly, theres a new sandwich combination that’s going viral.

The New York Times shared a recipe for a peanut butter and pickle sandwich which has people divided.

“Dwight Garner, a book critic for The Times, makes a strong case for this, his favourite sandwich, calling it ‘a thrifty and unacknowledged American classic,’” the article, which was shared on Twitter explains.

“The vinegary snap of the pickles tempers the unctuousness of the peanut butter, and it’s an unusual pantry sandwich for when luncheon meats leave you cold.” 

The reaction on Twitter seems mostly negative with many choosing to “pass”.

“I love pickles so much, but this is a hard pass,” one user commented.

Another added: I just called the police and homeland security.” 

But not everyone hates the idea.

“I have also made this sandwich with jalapeño slices, and it rocks my world.” 

Speaking to Better Homes and Gardens, sandwich fan Ed Haliday said it’s not as bad it looks.

“It’s OK. Definitely not as bad as I thought it would be,” he said.

Describing his experience, Ed explains, “First I get the vinegar pickle hit, with a bit of creamy mouthfeel from the peanut butter.”

“Then that goes and I end up with just a peanut butter mouthful. Each bite is like a two-course meal,” he added.

So would Ed make this sandwich again?

“Probably not. But if someone offered me one I would accept.”
