How do you store your bread? For some people, it’s just on the kitchen counter, for others it’s in the freezer and for some it’s in a traditional bread bin. Whatever your preference, if you’re looking for a new way to keep bread fresh, you could consider this Kmart product hack for a $12 6L fridge storage container.
The container was originally marketed on the Kmart website with imagery of capsicums and carrots and is still sold as a fridge storage container. Many of the reviews also describe how they’re a great way to keep vegetables fresh and crisp.
However, some Kmart enthusiasts have found that the kitchen essential makes a great container for bread, keeping it fresher for longer.
How this Kmart bread bin hack works
Sharing the hack in the Kmart Hacks and Decor Facebook group, the savvy shopper revealed that she’s doubled the time her bread stays fresh. It’s also very simple. All she does is place the loaf inside the container and keep the ventilation latch closed when in storage.
“Since using the veggie container for my bread it keeps twice as long,” the woman shared.
Other users in the group were keen to try it for themselves.
“Omg, gluten-free bread always has stupid packaging, this would be so much better!” another Kmart fan exclaimed.
Another added “Wow. They are fab for fruit and veg but never thought about bread!”
While some hacks come and go, this particular Kmart product is still a popular bread bin alternative, with one reviewer in 2024 stating: “I bought this after reading somewhere that it is great to keep bread fresher for longer. This hack is so true!!! I love it. I bought 2, one for my bread and one for my rolls. To buy an actual bread storing bin that seals out the air can be $60 upwards.”
The clear containers are 15cm (H) x 35.2cm (W) x 16cm (D) and stackable, making them great for organising your fruit, vegetables, herbs and now bread as well.
However, if you plan to buy and try this hack for yourself, just know that they are freezer-safe but not dishwasher-safe.
