Eggs are one of those multi-functional foods that serve a multitude of purposes. Eggs can be a breakfast food all on their own, they’re perfect when paired with toast and bacon, yet they’re also an integral ingredient to many different recipes for cakes and sweet treats.
Eggs can also last a very long time when stored correctly. In fact, Healthline reports the average egg – if kept refrigerated below 7 degrees Celsius – can last four to five weeks. However, if you eat those eggs towards the end of that five weeks, you may find they lack flavour.
However, even when stored correctly, the taste and quality of an egg can be sorely compromised after long periods of time in storage. And there’s a nifty little hack for testing what condition your egg is in!
Place an egg in a tall glass of cold water. If the egg lays on its side on the bottom of the glass, it is at peak freshness. If the egg stand upright on one end but is still touching the bottom of the glass, the egg is starting to age past its peak, but is still safe to eat. If the egg floats – it is not fresh. While this doesn’t necessarily mean it has gone off, it isn’t going to be much of an egg.

Another way to tell if an egg has gone bad is to shake it against your ear. If you hear lots of sloshing it’s probably too old to eat. If you hear very little movement within the egg – it is most likely fresh. Also, if your egg smells once cracked, it has gone off.
