Whether you use the air fryer, oven or microwave (we do not condone this!), the frozen chip is a staple in many Aussie homes.

But when browsing the supermarket freezer aisle, there are so many options that families often get stumped as to which is best.

Luckily, CHOICE has been on the case and reviewed over 34 Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and IGA brands to see which one has come out on top.

Rather than being limited to just testing for taste, the consumer advocacy group has also rated the brands based on other factors, including:

  • Health rating
  • Potato percentage
  • Ethical rating
  • Nutrition
  • Pricing

The overall winners are listed in the CHOICE Expert Rating Section, in which chips were tested for their appearance, aroma, flavour, and texture. These chips are also ranked by category depending on their cut: straight cut, crinkle cut, shoestring fry, and beer-battered chip.

Which brand came out on top?

With an taste test score of 89% and nutrition score of 80%, this frozen chip bag is the top recommended product by CHOICE.

In the category of your standard straight cut chip, Birds Eye reigns supreme as well! Unsurprisingly, this chip brand also won in the crinkle cut chip category.

So, how did the judges come to this conclusion?

The judging panel included Amanda Walker, Co-Founder and Owner of Lord of the Fries; Fiona Mair, seasoned home economist and test coordinator at Choice; Adrian Lini, test officer at Choice with a background in agricultural science; and Conrad Lucas-Holland, Systems Administrator in Choice’s IT department chosen to represent the everyday consumer.

At $5.80 per 900g packet, the judges applauded the winning chips and explained to news sources that their “golden colour and crispy and fluffy texture” and flavour “noticeably of baked potato” were the main standouts.

The surprising stand outs

Shoestring/thin category winner: Woolworths Essentials French Fries

The shoestring fry or thin category winner was actually a Woolworths home-brand bag. The Woolworths Essentials French Fries, although with an overall score of 66%, scored the highest in the thin chip category. Priced at $4.15 for a whole kilo of chips, this bag is definitely worth the price!

The other category winner, for steakhouse chips, is again a Woolworths brand: Woolworths Australian Beer Batter Steakhouse Chips
