What do you usually serve up for Easter dinner? Is a seafood extravaganza on the table, or do you prefer a nice warm roast?

Many love to stick to the traditional lamb, however, there are so many special occasion recipes out there to choose from! Let’s take a look at our favourite Easter recipes, and see which one takes your fancy.

But first, an important question must be answered. What exactly is an Easter recipe?

What is traditional Easter food?

As with most traditions, Easter food varies across different countries.

In Italy, sweet yeasted breads decorated with colourful eggs are a favourite, while in Greece they make a similar recipe using red coloured eggs instead.

In Spain they enjoy torrijas at Easter, which is similar to French toast.

What do Australians eat for Easter?

Easter food for Australians doesn’t tend to be quite as specific as a Christmas food feast, however there are certain elements that tend to appear on most Easter tables for lunch or dinner.

Roast meats such as slow roasted lamb shoulder or a classic roast chicken are usually at the centre of each table, often accompanied with delicious trays of salad or roasted vegetables.

Hot Cross Buns are always a favourite, with many choosing to use leftover hot cross buns in desserts.

What is a traditional Good Friday meal?

Seafood plays a large role in a lot of menus for Good Friday as a lot of people choose to avoid red meat on this day.

From the classic budget friendly tuna mornaytuna patties, to the always crowd favourite barbecued prawns a Good Friday menu can take lots of forms!

Many people like to make hot cross buns from scratch on Good Friday as it’s a public holiday. That means there’s plenty of time to enjoy the process of making these fluffy spiced rolls from scratch.

What kind of desserts do people eat on Easter?

Easter desserts don’t tend to follow as much of a specific pattern as other styles of meals over Easter.

Some people prefer to serve desserts without chocolate (as there’s so many chocolate eggs around already!), things like lemon meringue pie, fresh strawberry tart or a basque cheesecake. However, most love a chocolate filled extravaganza to serve up, combining all of the favourite Easter flavours like this snazzy hot cross bun bombe alaska or fun Easter Egg slice.

If you haven’t decided what to serve or need some ideas to help you get started, BHG has rounded up all our best recipes for Easter.
