One of the biggest challenges people face when making a cake is uneven icing. No matter how hard you try, it’s common for the icing to become lopsided. While it will still taste just as good, it can be very frustrating.

Lori Howell, aka cake360school, took to TikTok to share a technique she uses to get smooth icing on her cakes every time, and it’s a game changer.

No-fail method for perfectly smooth icing

The video shows Lori icing a cake as usual. She mentions that she prefers to freeze her cakes before icing them to prevent the crumbs from falling off. If you don’t want to freeze your cake, do a crumb layer of icing instead.

Once the top of the cake is covered in icing, Lori grabs some baking paper and places it over the icing and works her magic.

“Apply it like a sticker and carefully work out all the bubbles,” she says.

Next is when things get really interesting. Lori takes a cake board that’s slightly bigger than her cake and places it on top of the baking paper. (she’s using an 8-inch cake board on a 6-inch cake.)

Then she flips it over!

Now the cake board that was on the bottom is on the top. Using the top cake board as leverage, she ices the sides of the cake before smoothing the edges with a cake scraper.

“Pop it back in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Flip it back over. Peel off the paper, and bam, perfection,” she finishes.

So there you have it, perfectly smooth icing in minutes.
