Research reveals flatpack furniture is a cause of conflict in Australian households

Northern Territory is the best state at assembling flatpack furniture - by Laura Barry

Research reveals flatpack furniture is a cause of conflict in Australian households

Everyone has constructed flatpack furniture at some stage of their life. Whether it was minimal assembly with pieces from Kmart and Target, or more elaborate construction challenges from Fantastic Furniture and Ikea, the experience is the same. The instructions are hard to understand, there’s always a spare screw left over and at least one argument has broken out during the assembly process.

According to research undertaken by Flatpack Assembly Services, more than half of all Australians have argued with their partner when putting together flatpack furniture, and six out of 10 Australians have experienced a flatpack furniture disaster, from parts attached to the wrong bits to integral screws being left out.

Interestingly, we Australians seem to believe we are flatpack geniuses. The research also found that eight out of 10 Aussies class their flatpack abilities as ‘capable’, despite 6 out of 10 people admitting they’ve messed it up once or twice before.

However, the true gold discovered by this research is the fact Australians living in the Northern Territory are the most confident flatpack furniture builders in the country, with nine out of 10 people in the territory describing themselves as capable flatpack builders.

Millennials were also found to be the most adept age group at flatpack furniture assembly, while those aged over 51 years reported to be the worst at flatpack furniture construction. Interestingly, those aged over 51 also reported they’d never had an argument with their partner over flatpack furniture.

“A lot of the time we’re contacted after people have attempted to assemble the item of furniture themselves and have either assembled it incorrectly or have given up. We see the aftermath of a lot of fights!” says Ray Liceralde, Franchise owner at Flatpack Assembly Services Mascot. “Once people work with us, they tend to return to us again and again. The relief of knowing that their furniture will be assembled quickly, correctly and without stress is hard to pass up.”

Maybe we should leave it to the professionals after all.
