If you’ve ever flown in a plane, you’ve probably experienced turbulence.
While planes are built to withstand a huge amount of strain, such as turbulence, flying through it can be terrifying.
Appearing on the Today show in the US, pilot Captain Ron Neilsen revealed a calming technique used in their FearlessFlight program to help anxious flyers.
While experiencing turbulence, Neilsen advises grabbing a pen and paper and start writing your name with the opposite hand you would normally write with.
“Just keep writing your name,” Captain Neilsen said.
“It first causes her to focus extra-hard on what she’s doing, because she doesn’t normally write with her other hand ... and not on the turbulence.
“And the second thing is, it’s actually crossing over her motor function in her brain, using the other side of her brain from what she would normally do. We’re disrupting the thinking.”
