Here, we have rounded up some top expert tips for styling with cushions.
How many cushions do I need to style my room?
The number of cushions for your sofa really depends on your style and preference. For a traditionally styled room, stick to an even number of cushions as this will give you a more symmetrical look. For a more modern style, odd numbers are the way to go. While the number of cushions you place on a sofa or settee is subjective, and depends on the style of room and your personal preference, five cushions on a three-seater settee and four on a two-seater sofa is a good guide. Single chairs are best kept to one cushion.
Use accent colours to draw the eye
An easy way to inject colour into your room is to use accent colours. This is particularly effective in rooms with a neutral colour scheme. Sometimes, neutral colour schemes can look boring without a pop of colour. It is also possible that a bright colour scheme, ideal in the sunny days of summer, can lack warmth in the winter months. Accent pillows don't overpower the room but add that injection of colour that makes all the difference. Choose a colour from a rug, curtains, or even your favourite artwork to tie your décor together with accent pillows.
Can I use bold cushions on colours?
Of course, because changing your cushions is a simple and relatively economical thing to do, so you can experiment with bright colours. If, after a while, you decide that you don’t like the look, it is easy to change your whole look – simply get new cushion covers in a different colour.
Tip: If you are using a bold, plain colour for a cushion, add extra interest by using a fabric that has texture, or choose embellishments such as beading or embroidery.
Add a touch of luxury
Because the amount of fabric used for a cushion isn’t huge, it is possible to splash out on some quality material without breaking the bank. So treat yourself to cushions that use extravagant materials such as velvets, dyed linens, or even faux fur to create the wow factor. Fabrics with texture are tactile and add a touch of sophistication to even the most basic sofa. Just remember not to go overboard; particularly when it comes to using faux fur. Team your fur cushion with checks, cord or velvet rather than going all-out with fur.
Furnish the floor
Another way to add colour and style to your room, and create additional seating space at the same time, is to add some floor cushions to your interior. Floor cushions can create a cosy reading nook, a great place for kids to relax, or just an attractive focal point. As well as in the living room, floor cushions are also a great way to add comfort to your patio, balcony or decking. And if you can’t find what you are looking for, you can even make your own floor cushions from a favourite throw or some material. Add buttons, tassels or cord along the edges for extra interest.
