Six ways to give your small outdoor space a revamp

Colour up your courtyard - by Better Homes and Gardens

Six ways to give your small outdoor space a revamp

Small and pokey outdoor spaces are often overlooked. However, with a little imagination and some clever decorating ideas, even the humblest courtyard can be transformed into a charming outdoor entertaining area. By working with existing structures and characteristics, renovating your outdoor space doesn't need to be difficult or cost a fortune. In fact, sometimes the most subtle of changes like a new colour scheme can make a huge difference.

  1. Feature Wall

feature wall

Hide an unsightly or bare wall with a fresh coat of paint in a bold or dark colour. An outdoor feature wall will create a focal point for your chill-out zone and help to harmonise the entire space. To produce an eye-catching texture, try fixing timber battens vertically to the flat surface before painting. Ensure to pick a paint that will endure the elements. Here, Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen in the colour Dulux Domino creates the perfect backdrop.

  1. Go Green

staghorns

No grass, no worries. Inject greenery into your outdoor space with a selection of patio trees, hanging pots and a variety of climbing plants. Here, striking staghorns adorn the feature wall transforming the space into an outdoor oasis. Perfect for a shady courtyard, this quirky take on a feature wall is simple yet stunning.

  1. On The Fence

To offset the dark or bold feature wall, paint adjoining fences or walls in lighter or neutral shades. To brighten the space, we've opted to paint the fence using Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen in the colour Dulux Vivid White™. A neutral wall or fence is a classic never-fail backdrop that leaves your options open to decorate with bursts of bright and vibrant decor.

  1. Garden Wall

A vertical plant screen or wall is a great way to add a garden element without compromising on space. Here, we have opted for hardwood posts to frame the feature and to add some natural grain to complement the chosen colour scheme. A panel of reinforcing mesh is mounted on the posts using 30mm button screws. For a rustic look and feel, try cutting away at some of the squares using an angle grinder or bolt cutters. Complete the look with a pair of rustic pots with premium potting mix for a climber to sprawl over and flourish.

  1. Co-ord Decor

A statement door and matching furniture will lift your outdoor design. Give doors, window frames and key pieces of furniture a coordinated paint job to bring the space together. To complement the dark grey feature wall and bright white fence, a warm and welcoming colour like Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen in the colour Dulux Pale Mustard will add depth and a touch of elegance to the space. Decorate with pink accents and quirky accessories like birdcages for the ultimate and cool-chic look.

  1. Light It Up

Great for small spaces and amazingly inviting, string lighting adds the final magic touch to this revamped courtyard. Opt for festoon lighting for an on-trend look and welcoming ambience.

Small spaces and big ideas have HUGE potential. Sometimes it’s just a matter of changing a few little things here and there, and a change of colour scheme to make an old space feel brand new!
