The ‘70s bathroom trend that’s making a big comeback

It takes skill to get this one right. - by Laura Barry

The ‘70s bathroom trend that’s making a big comeback

The bathroom is one of the most expensive rooms of the house to renovate. From tiles and waterproofing to sinks, shower frames and bath tubs, the bathroom is one space you want to get right the first time around. That means picking a design and colour scheme that can withstand the test of time.

For many people, that means sticking to the usual colour suspects; white, cream and grey. However, a trend that was once popular in the ‘70s has swung back around and we’re now seeing it in contemporary bathroom renovations everywhere.

The pastel-hued basin is making a comeback. From candy-floss shades of pink and purple to delicate greens and barely-there blues, the coloured bathroom basin is a style statement many homeowners are now making.

While all-white interiors have dominated the decorating scene for some time now, 2019 has marked the return of bold colour and saturated jewel tones in homes. As a result, once-white domains, such as bathrooms and kitchens, are now enjoying something of a colour renaissance.

However, the key to getting this trend right is all about selecting cutting edge shapes in contemporary colours, and installing them into a bathroom that complements a coloured basin, rather than being dominated by it.

Keep it simple

A white and pink bathroom accented with gold tapware and timber is the perfect fit for a coloured basin. The white and timber combo is classic, while the pink and gold keep it contemporary and make the coloured basin feel like a natural addition.

Stick to a shape

For a cohesive bathroom design, pair a coloured, rectangular basin with a rectangular mirror and carry the shape throughout the space with rectangular tiles.  The matching timber cabinetry and mirror frame make the overall look feel totally effortless.

Don’t be afraid of dark colours

Not all bathrooms need to be light and bright, play with texture instead. This bathroom combines a raw timber benchtop with earthy colours, textured paint and raised grey ceramic basins to great effect. The overall look feels innovative yet timeless.

Choose a focal point

The coloured basin is the perfect opportunity to create a focal point in your bathroom. This all-grey room feels significantly less boring thanks to the unexpected pop of blue.

You aren’t limited to one colour

Lucky enough to have a bathroom that fits two occupants easily? Why not be bold and have two coloured basins instead of one?
