How an empty cola bottle can save you money

Three clever hacks. - by Laura Barry
  • 24 Aug 2018

Saving money and getting ahead is a goal everyone can relate to, and hacks that can make saving a little bit easier, and a little more fun are always welcome. Here are three savings hacks that can help you get ahead with little to no effort, and some are even fun enough for the kids to try.

Saving hack #1

The empty soda bottle

Next time you polish off a 600ml bottle of soft drink, wash it up, dry it out and use it as a piggy bank. Every time you get a $2 coin, pop it in the soft drink bottle. It’s thought that a 600ml soft drink bottle can hold somewhere around $880 worth of $2 coins.

Alternatively, little tykes can start with a 250ml bottle which will hold around $350 worth of $2 coins.

If you’re someone who uses lots of cash, try taking this hack to the next level and start dropping your $2 coins into an empty one litre bottle, which will around $1500 worth of $2 coins.

Savings hack #2

The 52 week challenge

The 52 week savings challenge is simple and easy, and will see you pocketing $1378 at the end of it.

The idea is you save the same amount of money as the week of the challenge you are in. For example, week one you would save $1, week five you would save $5, week 10 you would save $10 and week 52 you would save $52.

Saving hack #3

The bad habits jar

Revisit the concept of a swear jar. Or a bad habits jar.

If you, your partner or kids have some bad habits such as swearing, nail-biting or forgetting to make the bed, put together a bad-habits jar and penalise them $1 for every offense. Not only will this break bad habits quick, but you can allocate a jar to each family member and once they hit the one-month mark of breaking the bad habit, they’ll have a little sum of money to go shopping with or put towards something special.
