Well, most of the time. According to Australia’s leading consumer advocacy group, Choice, some products from Ikea are better than others. And there are a couple that you should definitely steer clear of altogether.
So what do the experts say? Choice put Ikea products through rigorous testing and identified two products you should avoid buying:
1. Ikea Nedkyld fridge
According to Choice, this fridge has limited features and failed its energy test, which means your food won’t last as long.
Choice's whitegoods expert, Ashley, says: "A fridge should last you 10 to 15 years, so you'd be wearing the expense of this misguided purchase into the next decade and beyond."
2. Ikea Sundvik change table
It might have a reasonable price tag of $249, but this change table is “plagued with issues”. Not only does in come in a whopping 199 pieces, it failed Choice’s in-house stability test.
Choice’s expert Kim Gilmour says: "The instructions warn that this table should always be secured to a wall, but we don't believe people are likely to always do this, so we tested on an unsecured unit."
According to Ikea, the change table assembly requires securing it to the wall and it’s only safe when it’s been secured.
In May 2019, Ikea recalled this model due to three incidents where the foldable part came loose and children fell off the changing table.
Kim says: "This change table is a recipe for trouble and is best avoided. The hinges that are used to unfold the table can buckle if they're not secured. Parents are obviously busy and are likely to flip the table open and change their child without latching the hinges, which makes them weaker and prone to breaking."
