Build your own bedhead

And sleep as snug as a bug in a rug - by Aaron Clayton
  • 01 Sep 2016
Build your own bedhead

Gather your supplies

• Frame top and bottom (2) 70 x 30 x 1800mm primed pine

• Frame sides and middle support (3) 70 x 30 x 1140mm primed pine

• 1200 x 1800 x 16mm MDF

• Timber-look vinyl flooring ‘planks’

You’ll also need

PVA; timber screws; drill and bits; quick-setting filler; fine-grit sandpaper; utility knife; cutting mat; small L brackets or split battens.

Note:

For an additional fee, you can have your timber and MDF cut to size.

Here’s how

Step 1

To make a 1200 x 1800mm frame, butt join top, bottom and sides together to form a rectangle. Apply glue, predrill, then screw together with 2 screws at each corner. Also glue and screw the middle support in a centred position between top and bottom of frame.

Step 2

Apply glue to 1 edge of frame, place MDF sheet on top, then predrill, countersink and drive screws through face of MDF to secure assembly together.

Step 3

Fill screw holes on face of MDF with filler. Once completely dry, lightly sand front of MDF until perfectly smooth. Brush away dust to prevent lumps under vinyl later.

Step 4

Starting at bottom, begin laying out vinyl planks flush with bottom edge of MDF. Remove backing paper, 1 by 1, and stick vinyl planks in position. Working up the face of MDF, aim to stagger planks of vinyl so joins are distributed evenly. Continue until face of bedhead is covered. Use utility knife to trim vinyl at edges where necessary.

...

Step 5

To cover side edges of frame, measure, mark up and, using utility knife on cutting mat, trim vinyl planks lengthways to suit. Remove backing paper and
stick in position.

Step 6

Using small L brackets at sides, affix bedhead to your wall, in a level position, into studs or plugs in masonry walls. Or, for a concealed fixing, choose off-the- shelf metal split battens – just affix 1 half to wall and other half to back of bedhead, then hang in position.

...

And voila!
