5 iconic experiences in Canada

After two years without overseas travel, we’re ready to start planning our next big holiday. At the top of our list is Western Canada, a region renowned for its natural beauty and outdoor adventures.

From national parks in the Canadian Rockies to scenic lakes and pristine ski areas across Banff and Lake Louise, this destination is the perfect panacea to pent-up wanderlust. Be inspired to jump back into travel with these iconic bucket list experiences.

1. Sightsee national parks from a gondola

In the province of Alberta, Banff National Park is a must-visit. The picturesque park is made up of scenic valleys, mountain peaks, glacial lakes, and abundant wildlife.

Take the Banff Gondola up Sulphur mountain for sweeping views of six Canadian Rockies mountain ranges, or opt for the Lake Louise Sightseeing Gondola to travel over a grizzly bear wildlife corridor.

2. Canoe on turquoise glacial lakes

In summer, explore the lakes and waterways of the Canadian Rockies by kayak or canoe. Drifting across the tranquil lakes in Banff (such as Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and Vermilion Lakes) is an excellent way to appreciate the vast wilderness from a different perspective.

3. Drive the Icefields Parkway

Rated one of the most scenic alpine drives in the world by Conde Nast Traveller, the Icefields Parkway is a 232km stretch of double-lane highway winding along the Continental Divide linking Banff and Jasper National Parks.

Every bend of the road promises a stunning vista of the Rocky Mountains, from sweeping valleys to lush pine forests and postcard-perfect lakes. On your drive, keep an eye out for the region’s iconic wildlife, such as shaggy mountain goats, caribou and elk.

4. Explore deep canyons

Carved into limestone bedrock by thousands of years of water erosion, there are several incredible canyons to explore in the Canadian Rockies in both summer and winter, such as the Johnston Canyon in Banff.

During summer, hike the canyon trails to discover lush waterfalls and deep pools. As for the winter months, join a guided tour with ice cleats and explore a natural frozen wonderland.

5. Ski in the Rocky Mountains

If you’re visiting the Canadian Rockies during the cooler seasons, experience the thrill of world-class skiing. Banff is home to three iconic ski areas known as SkiBig3, including Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt Norquay.

Further north in Jasper, Ski Marmot Basin is beloved for its uncrowded slopes, even in the peak of the holidays. Skiing in the Rocky Mountains is, without a doubt, a once-in-a-lifetime activity to add to your bucket list.

For an unforgettable experience, book a travel package with Flight Centre or Travel Associates. They can help you plan your holiday stress-free with a wide choice of travel options, creating a personalised itinerary for you and your family.
