This showpiece will receive a standing ovation. Made from paperbacks glued together, there’s no cutting needed for the tent itself, just simple folding.
Gather your supplies
3-4 thick paperback books (500 or more pages); blue acrylic paint; paintbrush; ruler; pencil; red coloured card; bias binding; clamps; bamboo skewer; thick card; scissors; glue
Step 1 Remove covers from books and discard. Remove 4 pages from 1 book and set aside for later use. Stack books and glue spines together, clamping while drying.
Step 2 Paint reserved pages blue using acrylic paint thinned with water. Leave to dry.
Step 3 Using a photocopier, enlarge Big Top diagram to 200%. Trace Bunting onto painted pages 20 times and cut out. Glue or machine stitch triangles to bias. Cut a 8.5 x 2.5cm strip from painted page and cut a ‘V’ shape into 1 end to form a flag. Glue to end of bamboo skewer.
Step 4 Trace Cone onto red card and cut out. Join sides of cone with glue. Cut 9cm circle from thick card for base.
Step 5 Fold top corner of first right-hand page of book to meet spine and crease well.
Step 6 Fold bottom corner of next right-hand page in to meet spine and crease well. Fold top corner of same page to meet spine and crease well.
Step 7 Alternate Steps 5 and 6 to fold all remaining pages.
Step 8 Glue first and last pages together along spine, clamping while drying. When dry, arrange bunting on big top, trimming if needed, and join ends to make a loop. Add cone and flag to centre.
