7 beauty hacks with bi-carb soda

Turn this baking ingredient into a beauty essential. - by Laura Barry

7 beauty hacks with bi-carb soda

Bi-carb soda might be your go-to DIY cleaner that removes grease and brings back shine, but it can also be used for at-home beauty hacks. The baking essential is a naturally occurring mineral called sodium bicarbonate, and it’s a pure leavening agent that needs to be mixed with moisture and an acidic ingredient for a chemical reaction to take place and make food rise. It’s one of those magical ingredients that can help you cut costs by using one product for multiple purposes.

1. Make shampoo

Do you wish your hair had more volume? Mix one to two tablespoons of bi-carb soda in 1 cup of water, wash through hair, then rinse with one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed with 1 cup of water. The results are shiny, voluminous locks. Just want a deeper clean? Add a teaspoon to your usual shampoo and wash like normal.

2. Remove your tan

Bi-carb soda can remove fake tan. Thoroughly mix half a cup of bi-carb soda with half a cup of lemon juice and apply to the areas of tan you are trying to remove, wait a few minutes then rinse off the paste. Repeat until your faux glow has faded to a more discreet colour.

3. Fix oily hair

If you’ve found yourself in the pickle of not having enough time to wash your hair and sans dry shampoo, bi-carb soda is the solution. Sprinkle a small amount of bi-carb soda on your roots and work it through your scalp, then shake out as much excess as possible.

4. Clean your hair and makeup brushes

Keep your brushes in tip top condition and germ free by filling one bowl with warm water, add a few teaspoons of bi-carb soda and drop your brushes in. Wash, rinse, dry.

5. Refresh your toothbrush

Soak your toothbrush in a bi-carb solution overnight and rinse in the morning for a fresh clean in the morning.

6. Soothe sore feet

Mix three tablespoons of bi-carb soda into a basin of warm water and soak your sore feet. They’ll feel better in no time.

7. Deodorant

Found yourself running late, ran out of deodorant and pondering the thought of ponging all day Bi-carb soda dusted over your armpit can absorb body odour.
