5 reasons why timber is a smart and stylish flooring choice

Hardwood floors are one of the most popular flooring options in homes across Australia. Whether we’re talking about original hardwood flooring in heritage-listed houses, or engineered timber flooring in new homes, timber is a timeless flooring classic that only gets better as it ages.

However, if you’re still a little hesitant to go down the timber floor route, or you’re simply deciding whether pulling up your carpet is a good idea or not, we spoke to the renovation and adhesive experts – the Bostik Boys Adrian Franchina and Mark Menegatti, to find out why timber flooring is one of the best flooring options out there.

1. It lasts a lifetime and is cost-effective

“A timber floor is harder and more durable than other surfaces. Flooring alternatives such as vinyl, laminate, bamboo, carpet and tiles have a lifespan of 10 – 15 years, and although they might look like a cheaper option, in the long-term timber can prove to be more cost effective.”

2. Healthier option

“Timber flooring has been proven to lower stress levels, heart rate and blood pressure and can even balance emotional states. Timber floors can also moderate humidity levels, which improves air quality. Unlike man-made products, timber doesn’t contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can be harmful to health.”

3. It’s unique

“Born from Mother Nature, every tree and timber floorboard is unique, ensuring no two floors will ever be the same. This can't be said for most flooring options like bamboo, vinyl, laminate, carpet and carpet tiles.”

4. Quick to clean

“When it comes to maintenance, hardwood is easier to keep clean than most other flooring options. A quick sweep or antistatic mop will pick up most of the dirt, and a damp mop once a month is all the attention your floors will need.”

5. Sustainable

“Most timber floors are sourced from carefully managed Australian forests. The actual carbon emitted during the production of floorboards is far less than the carbon emitted producing other materials such as concrete and ceramic tiles. Wood breaks down naturally when disposed of, unlike carpet, vinyl or tiles, and timber floors also act as a natural insulator bringing warmth to your home and reducing the need for heating.”
