Why dig when you can layer? Preparing the soil before you plant is the key to healthy produce. With this technique, the soil prepares itself while you’re reaping a fantastic harvest! You simply build up the layers with this multipurpose planter cage.
Gather your supplies
• 1.5m timber stakes (4)
• 2–3m chicken wire (1.0mm gauge)
• Tie wire
• 100mm-dia. PVC pipe
• Straw or hay
• Compost soil
You’ll also need
• Drill; 25mm-dia. hole saw; compost worms; kitchen scraps
Step 1 Hammer 4 stakes into ground, forming a square approx. 60cm across. Wrap chicken wire around stakes to form circle and fasten with tie wire.
Step 2 Cut PVC to height of cage. Drill holes all around. Position in centre of cage.
Step 3 Add a 30cm-deep layer of straw or hay. Top with a 30cm-deep layer of soil. Repeat layering twice, finishing with soil.
Step 4 Add a few handfuls of worms to the centre PVC pipe and kitchen scraps to give them a good food supply. Plant out the top of the cage with your choice of vegies or herbs.
