6 steps to creating a modern kitchen that will last for years

If your kitchen is looking a little tired or out of date, give it a new lease of life by introducing a contemporary Scandi-style. Use fresh white surfaces, warm timber accents, and sleek black appliances, add horizontal lines with shelves and handles and accessorise with cool greens and blues.

How to recycle and revamp the heart of your home

1 Create your mood board

Decide on your colour palette, then gather paint swatches, tile samples, pictures, accessories to create it.

2 Strip the room

Remove old appliances such as the microwave, stovetop, rangehood and oven, and pull out the sink. Keep utilities in the same spots to save reno dollars.

Steps 1 and 2 of renovating your kitchen

3 Remove cabinetry

Remove doors and carcasses of wall cabinets using a drill-driver. Then take out benchtops and handles on base cabinets.

4 Demolish the splashback

Use a hammer and chisel to prise tiles off wall. Patch wall in preparation for new tiles, here laid in a herringbone pattern.

Steps 3 and 4 of renovating your kitchen

5 Install new benchtops

Measure, cut and lay new benches. Think Solid offers seamless joins, and is scratch and stain resistant, visit thinkbenchtops.com.au.

6 Replace the sink and appliances

Made of a durable composite granite, a Silgranit double sink with drainage board and pull-out tap is practical and hygienic. If you are replacing your appliances, have a look at the new black glass ovens and compact appliances from Bosch. Combining a sleek, premium design with intuitive features, the new Series 8 black glass range provides a contemporary edge to your kitchen design. Perfect for those looking for something different.

Steps 4 and 5 of kitchen renovation

Add in some small DIY projects

Project 1: WINE RACK

Take advantage of the wasted space above a wall cabinet and install a custom-made wine holder. Built using benchtop timber and dowels it’s a cut, drill, glue and screw job.

Project 2: HANGING SHELVES

Create above-island storage without adding bulk or blocking sightlines with open timber-and-dowel shelves. The white top panel disappears into the ceiling.
