- Paint pots
Need a new look in your outdoor area? You can revitalise the appearance of basic terracotta pots with paint! Start by sealing the inside and outside of your chosen pots with an appropriate terracotta sealer. Let dry. Then, colour them up as you desire! For best results, choose a quality exterior paint (something like Dulux Weathershield will do the trick).
- Increase seating (and storage)
Turn a painted, solid timber trunk or blanket box into a handy outdoor storage unit. It’s easy! To do this, just attach lockable castor wheels to each corner on the underside of the chest. Positioned against a wall, you can throw on a few cushions to make it a comfy bench seat. Then, lift up the lid and you can store all kinds of supplies inside – outdoor cushions, throws, games, bug spray… you name it!
- Add ambience
Bring a charming glow to your outdoor area by suspending a series of lanterns. To mimic this look, attach a length of timber (here, coated in stain and varnish) to the roof over your deck or pergola. Screw cup hooks into the timber, spaced to suit your lanterns. Hang your lanterns on hooks and light them up at nightfall – you can use wax candles or choose battery-powered versions for added safety.
- Make a menu board
Do you entertain regularly at your place? If so, create a giant chalkboard where you can scribble up the night’s menu – just like a café! To make this, use a sheet of outdoor plywood as the base. Lightly sand, then coat the ply in primer. Once dry, apply 2 coats of chalkboard paint in your colour of choice. Frame the plywood with timber, allowing for mitre joins at the corners. You can apply paint or stain and varnish to the frame – pick the look you love most! Once you’re done, anchor the chalkboard at the top to prevent tipping.
- Get creative!
Bring unique flair to your entertaining area by incorporating salvaged items into your scheme. Try inserting old bike wheels into a timber screen for a graphic statement, transforming decommissioned cable reels into cosy-looking chairs or making a side table from reclaimed bits and bob. It’s all about using your imagination!
