Who: Nelly Robinson, originally from the UK, is head chef and owner of nel.restaurant in Sydney’s CBD. Robinson is no stranger to working in some of the world’s finest establishments, having worked at Michelin-starred restaurants Northcote Manor in Lancashire, UK and the Burlington at the Devonshire Arms Hotel in North Yorkshire, UK.
What is your favourite food and why? Potatoes. Not only are they a great source of carbohydrates, but they are so versatile and easy. My ultimate favourite is a serving of good old mash potato, with a generous drizzle of truffle oil and Lurpack butter.
What are you passionate about? Making people smile, and football!
What is your favourite holiday destination? Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera is one of the most beautiful places myself and partner Ashely have been. Given its location on the Mediterranean, seafood is plentiful and the smell of homemade focaccia tempts you all day long.
Who inspires you the most? My dad. He’s always been there for me and has never hesitated to pull me back into line when needed!
Who would you invite to a dinner party? Easy. David Attenborough, Barack Obama, Alan Shearer and John Cleese.
What are you reading at the moment? John Newton’s new book, The Oldest Foods on Earth: A History of Australian native foods. I use a lot of foraged native ingredients in my cooking and wanted to learn a little more about the origins of the produce.
Best advise you have ever received? It’s not how you get yourself in the sh*t, but how you get yourself out that counts. Oh, and my other favourite - which my staff will tell you I like to remind them of constantly - A clean kitchen is a happy kitchen!
Who are you following on instagram or twitter? Everyone and anyone!
Favourite movie or television program? My favourite film is Saving Private Ryan. As for TV - Fawlty Towers.
If you had a superpower, what would it be? I’d have a cloak of invisibility.
