The $15 mistake you’re making at the airport

Save yourself time and money. - by Laura Barry

The $15 mistake you’re making at the airport

All sorts of things can go wrong at airports. You can lose your luggage, miss a flight or even be unable to find your departure gate. On a more sinister note, your belongings can be stolen, or your luggage broken into by staff with nefarious intentions. Alas, there just isn’t much you can do to avoid those sorts of things, short of arriving early and putting locks on your luggage. However, there is one travel safety measure that is a total waste of time and money: wrapping a suitcase in plastic.

Having your suitcase wrapped in plastic costs around $15, usually wastes precious minutes of duty-free shopping time, and is 100 per cent useless.

If a dishonest person really wants to gain access to the contents of your luggage, the plastic used at wrapping stations can be cut open with anything from house keys to a nail file. Furthermore, a plastic-wrapped suitcase draws attention to itself, and may attract attention from the wrong sort of people.

The only benefit of wrapping a suitcase in plastic is that it may provide water-proof protection for fabric luggage.

If upping the security on your luggage is a top priority, then abstain from contributing to the piles of plastic landfill and instead invest your money into a light-weight hard-shell suitcase with a smart lock or built-in padlock. Even the humble cable tie will serve your security needs better.

But please, don’t fall into the plastic wrap trap.
